Raffael Bader: Walk in Sizzling Air
この度、公益財団法人現代芸術振興財団は、コレクション展「Raffael Bader: Walk in Sizzling Air」を、2023年8月25日〜9月22日にかけて開催いたします。 本展は、ラファエル・バーダが日本で初めて開催する個展です。
ラファエル・バーダの絵画作品は、主に自然の風景からインスピレーションを受けて制作される半抽象画を特徴としています。アーティストは、自然環境と人間の感情の繋がりに着目し、さまざまな厚みで重ねられる絵具のレイヤーと異なるテクスチャーを通して、平面的であると同時に奥行きを持って鑑賞者の前にたちあがるイメージを生み出します。バーダの作品を前にすると、自然環境の中に身を置いたアーティストの心と外界が一体となっていく様子を目撃しているような感覚を味わうことができます。
バーダは1987年生まれ、2019年にライプツィヒ視覚芸術アカデミー（ドイツ）を卒業後も同都市を拠点として活動し、ドイツ、英国、スイス、米国、日本を含む、世界各国で展覧会に参加してきました。アーティストの作品は、2022年に当財団の設立者・会長である前澤友作のコレクションに加わりました。本展覧会では、コレクションから絵画作品約10点を国内初公開いたします。

Contemporary Art Foundation is pleased to present "Raffael Bader: Walk in Sizzling Air" from August 25 to September 22, 2023. This exhibition marks the first solo exhibition in Japan by the artist.
Rafael Bader's paintings are characterized by semi-abstraction, which is mainly inspired by the natural environment. The artist focuses on the connection between the natural environment and human emotions, and through layers of paint with varying thickness and different textures, he creates images that are both flat with the depth, hinting on the process of the creation. Viewers in front of the artist’s works are invited to witness the artist's mind and the exterior world become one in the midst of a natural environment.
Bader was born in 1987 and has been based in the city since graduating from the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts (Germany) in 2019, and has participated in exhibitions around the world, including Germany, the UK, Switzerland, the US, and Japan. The artist's work joined the collection of Yusaku Maezawa, the founder and chairman, in 2022. In this exhibition, around 10 paintings from the collection will be exhibited for the first time in Japan.

［アーティストについて］
ラファエル・バーダの絵画作品は、主に風景を特徴としており、彼は世界がつながりを持つ緊張感に満ちた世界観を考察し、私たちを取り囲むあらゆる自然物や要素、そしてその一部としての私たち人間からなる自然を追求します。バーダは、自然調和を目指す混沌とした大地としてとらえます。これは、彼にとって生命の基本原理のように思えます。彼は私たちを取り巻く自然を利用して、内面の葛藤に向き合える作品を創造します。それには人間関係や自分自身の役割を理解する探求も含まれます。調和と混沌の原理が示唆するように、すべては過程の中にあります。美を求める脆弱な過程です。
バーダは通常、彼が「ノート」と呼ぶ小さなシンプルなドローイングから新しい絵画を始めますが、一度絵画を描き始めると、それはすぐに独自の命を持つようになります。彼はキャンバスに油絵具とオイルペンシルを使用して絵画を制作します。バーダは、油絵具を水と混和可能にするメディウムを使用しており、非常に薄く水っぽい層と厚い層をつくることができます。また、オイルペンシルと組み合わせることで、さまざまな質感をつくり出します。彼にとって重要なのは、過程を覆い隠さないことであり、キャンバスが完全に絵具で覆われたように見えないことです。

[Artist Statement]
In the paintings of Raffael Bader, which are largely characterized by landscape, he considers his view of a world full of tensions while these hold the world together. He pursues a nature that consists of all natural things and elements that surround us, as well as us humans as part of this nature. Bader understands nature as a chaotic ground that strives for harmony. This seems to him to be a basic principle of life. He uses the nature that surrounds us to create works in which he can face his inner conflicts. This includes interpersonal relationships and the search for understanding his role in this world. As the principle of the harmonic-chaotic thesis suggests, everything is in process. A vulnerable process in search of beauty. Bader usually starts new paintings with small, simple drawings that he call "notes", but once he starts a painting, this quickly takes on a life of its own. He paints with oil paint and oil pencils on canvas. Bader uses a medium that makes the oil paint water-miscible, so he can create very thin watery layers as well as thicker ones. In conjunction with the oil pencils, he can create different textures. It is important to him that the canvas does not appear to be completely covered in paint. Bader doesn't want to cover up the process.
